Effects of Methyldopa in Hypertension

Max Charles Igloe, MD

JAMA. 1964;189(3):188-190.

Abstract

Methyldopa demonstrated antihypertensive activity when prescribed in initial amounts of 1 gm daily in four divided doses to 51 patients with mild to moderate hypertension. The mean arterial pressure was reduced by an average of 34/18 mm Hg in the supine position and 34/24 mm Hg in the standing position. While methyldopa did not alter the hemogram, urinalysis, or liver-function pattern, febrile reactions and occipital headaches were outstanding side reactions. Other side effects included drowsiness and dry mouth, which were frequent but transient and tolerable.
