Shortening of Achilles Reflex Time After Exercise

Maurice Verdy, MD, FRCP (C), CSPQ; Jean Lapierre, MD; Hélène Sansoucy; Robert Lefebvre, MD

JAMA. 1968;204(1):71-73.

Abstract

Achilles reflex time (ART) has been advocated for assessing thyroid function in outpatients. The effect of exercise on ART was studied in 20 patients, six of whom were healthy, six were hospitalized for unrelated medical reasons, and eight had hypothyroidism. Control recordings with the subjects at rest were made. Following exercise there was significant shortening of ART in both euthyroid and hypothyroid groups. Shortened ART is significant clinically, since simultaneously prolonged ART of hypothyroid patients is in the normal range.
