Disseminated Herpes Simplex in a NewbornA Consequence of Infection in the Mother

JAMA. 1969;208(5):859-861.
Abstract
A subclinical genital infection in the mother was the source of virus in a disseminated, neonatal herpetic infection. Chronic, asymptomatic herpesvirus infection of the female genital tract, as a reservoir of infection, should be diagnosed before the time of delivery in order to prevent exposure of the fetus during passage through the birth canal.
