Abstract
Six patients with amebic dysentery were treated with metronidazole (Flagyl). The response to treatment in all cases was rapid; signs and symptoms of amebic dysentery disappeared within 48 hours. In one patient an ameboma resolved after 14 days of treatment. Except for a transient skin eruption in the 18-month-old child during the first 24 hours of treatment, there were no untoward reactions to the drug. We consider metronidazole to be an exceedingly promising drug and probably the most effective amebicidal preparation currently available.
