Samuel T. Darling and Human Sarcosporidiosis or Toxoplasmosis in Panama
Enrique Chaves-Carballo, MD
JAMA. 1970;211(10):1687-1689.
Abstract
In 1908, two years after his discovery of histoplasmosis, Samuel T. Darling, MD, reported sarcosporidiosis in a 20-year-old man in Panama. The description of the parasite and subsequent illustrations of the skeletal-muscle biopsy material provide strong evidence to suggest that the parasite he found was Toxoplasma gondii instead. If so, Darling should be credited with the first recorded description of toxoplasmosis in man.
