Abstract
Lung biopsy during the course of intensive steroid therapy in a case of idiopathic interstitial pulmonary fibrosis (Hamman-Rich syndrome) showed no evidence of the changes seen in the initial biopsy specimen. This was in keeping with the improvement experienced by the patient and evidenced by the results of pulmonary-function tests and serial thoracic roentgenograms. Massive doses of corticosteroids may be useful in this disease if initial response to treatment is disappointing.
