Abstract
Twelve years' experience with the Veterans Administration (VA) Clinical Investigator (CI) Program was evaluated. A 100% follow-up of 206 former Cls indicates that the original goals have been realized, in that 40% of these investigators are on VA hospital rosters, 35% more are on medical school staffs, and the Cls entering civilian practice undoubtedly improve the quality of medical care wherever located. Further, there is evident a heavy commitment to patient care, teaching, and research. Efforts to augment numbers of physicians in specialties where shortages persisted resulted in the introduction of additional steps in the program, leading eventually to a five-step career ladder research and education program.
