Abstract
Acute renal failure in association with idiopathic rhabdomyolysis developed in a 29-year-old man. Symptomatic hypercalcemia occurred during the diuretic period and was accompanied by hypercalciuria, elevated serum alkaline phosphatase level, decreased tubular reabsorption of phosphate, and an increased serum parathyroid hormone level. Transient hyperparathyroidism is suggested as the primary mechanism responsible for this unusual complication of acute renal failure and physicians are alerted to this potential hazard.
