Varicella Arthritis

John R. Ward, MD, MPH; Bruce Bishop, MD

JAMA. 1970;212(11):1954-1956.

Abstract

Typical chicken pox presented with arthritis in the left knee in a 5-year-old girl. Attempts to isolate bacteria, Mycoplasma, and viruses were unsuccessful. The arthritis subsided promptly and long term follow-up has failed to yield evidence of other disease. Varicella virus infection may be the cause of the arthritis.
