Abstract
Suprarenal venography has been performed in 50 women with virilization. The left suprarenal vein was catheterized in all 50 patients and the right vein in 36. Thirty-six patients had normal venous patterns. Eleven had venous patterns of adrenal hypertrophy, in one case confirmed by surgery. Three had patterns suggestive of adrenal tumor, in two cases confirmed by surgery. In patients with normal suprarenal venograms, 17 had elevated urinary 17-ketosteroid levels. All patients with a tumor pattern had high 17-ketosteroid levels. Although the correlation between the venographic findings and the degree of virilization or urinary 17-ketosteroid level was not good, women with severe virilization and elevated 17-ketosteroid values more frequently had abnormal adrenal glands.
