Tropical Sprue in Upstate New York
John S. Davis, MD
JAMA. 1970;213(5):735-738.
Abstract
A 17-year-old, upstate New York, high school student was found, on his return from two months spent in India, to have tropical sprue. With oral administration of tetracycline and folic acid, clinical, laboratory, and histologic response was rapid and essentially complete within three months. Such a diagnosis should be considered when natives of temperate climates return from visiting or residing in the tropics with diarrhea, weight loss, or other symptoms suggestive of a malabsorption syndrome.
