Abstract
Because of current trends in reducing tuberculosis hospital facilities somewhat erratically, we propose a close look at the future of tuberculosis control. Need for hospital treatment will persist for many years to come, and such units should ideally be closely affiliated with medical schools. Outpatient clinic surveillance has many pitfalls; therefore experienced professional personnel are needed. We have recently observed a series of cases in which relapse occurred 10 to 30 years after the original diagnosis of tuberculosis. Therefore the need for adequate tuberculosis control measures and treatment facilities can be projected many years ahead.
