Filtration of Schistosomes in Unanesthetized Man

Abstract
Removal of schistosomes from the portal venous blood by filtration in seven patients with Schistosoma mansoni was accomplished by means of an extracorporeal umbilico saphenous shunt, with the patients under local anesthesia. One to 305 worms were recovered, and flow rates of 530 to 1,425 cc/min were obtained. Quantitative stool egg counts up to 12 months after filtration demonstrate that retained schistosomes had resumed egg production in three of six patients. This study demonstrates the technical feasibility of total extracorporeal diversion of portal venous blood for reduction or elimination of the worm burden in schistosomiasis.
