A Dose of Spanish Fly

Andrew J. Presto III, MD; Edward C. Muecke, MD

JAMA. 1970;214(3):591-592.

Abstract

Acute cantharides intoxication, characterized by crampy abdominal pain, diarrhea, hematemesis, increased urinary frequency, dysuria, hematuria, and the appearance of blisters, was treated with intravenous fluid therapy and supportive care. Since our patient easily obtained his dose at a hippie gathering, we may encounter such poisonings more frequently.
