Selenomethionine Se 75 Thymus Scans in Myasthenia Gravis

Robert J. Cowan, MD; C. Douglas Maynard, MD; Richard L. Witcofski, PhD; Richard Janeway, MD; James F. Toole, MD

JAMA. 1971;215(6):978-979.

Abstract

Of 20 patients with myasthenia gravis studied with selenomethionine Se 75 mediastinal scans, two (10%) had positive scans. Both of these patients underwent surgery with removal of a thymoma. Since this radiopharmaceutical is accumulated in numerous tissues, false-positive studies may present some difficulty. The adult thymus, in the absence of a thymoma, does not appear to concentrate selenomethionine Se 75 sufficiently for external scanning. Negative studies may therefore be of value in ruling out the presence of a thymoma.
