Abstract
Hepatitis-associated antigen (HAA) was detected in the serum of a 5 1/2-month-old male infant with giant cell hepatitis. Three of four other members of the family were asymptomatic carriers of HAA with normal or nearly normal results of liver function tests and no history of liver disease. Results of liver biopsies of the carriers were compatible with resolving acute hepatitis in two and chronic hepatitis in one. In these cases, the detection of HAA was a sensitive indicator of the presence of liver disease.
