Methylphenidate Hallucinosis

Alexander R. Lucas, MD; Morris Weiss, MD

JAMA. 1971;217(8):1079-1081.

Abstract

Methylphenidate hydrochloride caused adverse behavioral reactions in three patients. In two instances, a 6 1/2-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy were receiving therapeutic dosages for hyperkinetic behavior. In the girl, a state of excitement occurred, followed by catatonic withdrawal, while the most prominent feature in the boy was hallucinosis. The third reaction, also hallucinosis, occurred in a 15-year-old girl who had taken an excess of medication. These reactions highlight the importance of close medical supervision of children receiving even relatively safe psychoactive drugs.
