Abstract
In a survey of blood bank physicians and medical directors in the United States conducted by the Scientific Advisory Committee of the American Association of Blood Banks, 980 (47%) of the 2,099 questionnaires were returned, with the majority of respondents being pathologists. Many of the blood bank physicians had received multiple specialty training as well as a master's or second doctorate degree. A relatively large segment received portions of their training via seminars and postgraduate courses. A number had no specialty certification with a smaller group having multiple or subspecialty certification. Specific and sustained graduate medical education programs and a mechanism for recognition should be developed for blood bank physicians and potential directors of blood banks and transfusion services.
