Abstract
Barium sulfate granuloma of the rectum, a sequela of direct trauma to the rectal mucosa in the course of a barium sulfate enema examination, is a benign, usually asymptomatic lesion that must not be confused with carcinoma. This case confirms previous reports that barium sulfate crystals are inert and remain radiographically demonstrable in tissue for long periods of time. The paucity of reports of this lesion suggests that trauma to the rectal mucosa incident to barium sulfate enema studies is uncommon.
