Anicteric Hepatitis Presenting as Polyarthritis

David P. Stevens, MD; James Walker, MD; Edward Crum, MD; Harold P. Roth, MD; Roland W. Moskowitz, MD

JAMA. 1972;220(5):687-689.

Abstract

In two patients polyarthritis was the presenting symptom of anicteric viral hepatitis. Hepatitis-associated antigen (HAA, Australia antigen) was found in the sera of both patients during the acute illness. Hepatitisassociated antigen was not found in the sera of 82 patients with other connective tissue disorders. When acute polyarthritis is unexplained, evaluation of liver function and testing for HAA may be rewarding even when the patient is not jaundiced.
