Coxsackievirus B Epidemic at a Boys' Summer Camp

Isolation of Virus From Swimming Water

H. Bradford Hawley, MD; David P. Morin; Margaret E. Geraghty; Jean Tomkow; C. Alan Phillips, MD

JAMA. 1973;226(1):33-36.

Abstract

During an outbreak of coxsackievirus B5 at a boys' summer camp located on Lake Champlain, virus was successfully isolated for the first time (to our knowledge) from a large body of recreational water. This was accomplished by using polyelectrolyte 60 to concentrate the virus. Polyelectrolyte 60 was also used in the isolation of viruses from clinical specimens obtained from campers and staff who had a wide variety of clinical syndromes. Virus present in lake swimming water may play an important role in some enterovirus outbreaks.
