Candida Myocarditis Causing Complete Atrioventricular Block

John E. Van Kirk, MD; Arthur B. Simon, MD; William R. Armstrong, MD

JAMA. 1974;227(8):931-933.

Abstract

Complete heart block developed unexpectedly in a 54-year-old patient with acute myelomonocytic leukemia and was successfully treated with temporary transvenous pacing. Subsequent autopsy showed several microabscesses of Candida albicans in the His bundle, without evidence of leukemic infiltration or hemorrhage into the conduction system. While the general incidence and importance of Candida myocarditis in leukemic patients is unknown, fungal myocarditis with abscess formation should be considered as a cause of cardiac rhythm disturbances in these and other immunosuppressed patients.
