Hyperthyroidism With Painless Subacute Thyroiditis in the Elderly

Michael Gordon, MD, FRCP(C); Cyril I. Gryfe, MD, FRCP(C)

JAMA. 1981;246(20):2354-2355.

Abstract

Six elderly patients experiencing weight loss, palpitations, or depression had the biochemical and clinical features of masked hyperthyroidism due to painless subacute thyroiditis. The syndrome is not commonly recognized in this age group and can be easily misdiagnosed unless appropriate investigations are undertaken. Supportive and symptomatic therapy is sufficient during the hyperthyroid phase of the disorder.
