Occult Foreign-Body Aspiration in Adults

Norman Wolkove, MD, FRCP(C); Harvey Kreisman, MD; Carol Cohen, MD, FRCP(C); Harold Frank, MD, MSc, FRCP(C)

JAMA. 1982;248(11):1350-1352.

Abstract

Foreign-body aspiration in the adult commonly results in proximal airway obstruction and acute life-threatening asphyxia. However, small foreign bodies that traverse the larynx are often asymptomatic initially and result in respiratory symptoms for weeks to years before diagnosis. We describe three patients in whom clinically important pulmonary sequelae developed after unrecognized foreign-body aspiration.
