Fatal Encephalitis Apparently due to Rabies

Occurrence After Treatment With Human Diploid Cell Vaccine But Not Rabies Immune Globulin

Jacques Devriendt, MD; Michel Staroukine, MD; Françoise Costy, MD; Jean-Jacques Vanderhaeghen, MD

JAMA. 1982;248(18):2304-2306.

Abstract

We describe a case of fatal encephalitis apparently due to rabies despite treatment with human diploid cell vaccine from the day of exposure but without rabies immune globulin (or serum). This case reinforces the need for rabies immune globulin as part of rabies treatment.
