An apparent epidemic of fatal asthma has occurred despite ever-increasing
expenditures for asthma medications. Atopy is the genetic predisposition
toward responses that result in the formation of large quantities of
allergen-specific IgE. Biotechnology has made it possible to manufacture
proteins that regulate immune responses.
