Two months of therapy appears to work as well as a 6-month course in preventing active tuberculosis (TB) from developing in adults coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Researchers from Haiti and the United States collaborated to compare the efficacy of isoniazid given twice a week for 6 months with a twice-a-week regimen of rifampin and pyrazinamide given for 2 months. The regimens were given to 750 patients who visited outpatient clinics in 2 Haitian cities. The researchers reported that TB developed in 4% of 370 patients in the isoniazid group and in 5% of 380 patients who received rifampin and pyrazinamide. The patients were followed up for 4 years.
