The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) is inviting health care organizations and other groups to submit their clinical practice guidelines for inclusion in what is envisioned as a 1-stop electronic database that will allow physicians, patients, and others with a computer and modem to tap into thousands of clinical guidelines (Federal Register. 1998;63:18027). Guidelines must meet certain inclusion criteriathey must, for example, contain systematically developed statements that include information that helps health care professionals make decisions about appropriate care in specific clinical situations.
The National Guideline Clearinghouse, a collaborative effort among the AHCPR, American Medical Association, and American Association of Health Plans, was developed to promote widespread access to guidelines. Guideline summaries will appear in a standardized format that will allow users to compare recommendations made by different groups on a particular topic.
