Merck-Sponsored Simvastatin (Zocor) Compliance Program for Patients Using Wal-Mart Pharmacy: Of Benefit to Whom?

To the Editor. I received in the mail September 10, 1997, a notice from Wal-Mart Pharmacy that they are concerned that "coronary heart disease remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality," and are "going to do something about it." They then inform me that they can help ensure that my patients who are "at increased risk" receiveand stay withthe treatment [I] prescribe." This is especially important with patients who are receiving Zocor (simvastatin), they say, because Zocor has been proven to save lives.
The letter then states that Wal-Mart Pharmacy will be "reviewing [their] pharmacy prescription database on a regular basis to determine whether a customer has failed to refill his or her prescription [for Zocor] at the expected time." If so, they will be contacting those persons to remind them to refill the prescription. And, of course, the patients will be receiving educational information about high cholesterol, coronary . . .
