Although great strides have been made in decreasing and nearly eliminating the occurrence of invasive disease caused by Haemophilus influenzae type B, we have not been nearly so successful with invasive disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis . Over the past few decades, the incidence of invasive meningococcal disease in the United States has remained relatively stable, despite the availability of a quadrivalent polysaccharide vaccine.1
Approximately 2500 cases of invasive meningococcal disease occur in the United States each year, with a case-fatality rate of 10% to 15%.2 Reasons for this stable incidence of disease are complex and pose substantial public health challenges. Many different meningococcal serogroups cause invasive disease, and within serogroups new clones emerge periodically that influence disease incidence and clinical course.
