A NEW REPORT, Ensuring Safe Food From Production to Consumption, maintains that the United States needs a single, focused effort that would eliminate current barriers to a rational, science-based approach to food safety.

The principal recommendations of the congressionally requested report, which was prepared by an ad hoc committee of the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council, are that Congress should establish a unified central framework, headed by one individual with adequate resources, that would set standards for food safety, inspection, monitoring, risk assessment, regulation enforcement, research, and education, as well as managing foodborne illness outbreaks and adequate surveillance for foodborne disease.
