Last week's column summarized resolutions discussed at the 1998 American Medical Association (AMA) Annual Meeting on residency training. This week's column focuses on the resolutions concerning public health, resident membership, and general medical education issues.
Appropriate Number of US Medical School Graduates
This Resident Physicians Section (RPS) resolution asked the AMA to help develop recommendations regarding the number of US medical school graduates needed to fulfill workforce needs. The AMA Council on Medical Education is currently studying workforce needs and will be reporting on its findings at the 1998 Interim Meeting.
Bring Back the Extinguisher
This RPS resolution asks the AMA to restore funding for "The Extinguisher," the AMA's antitobacco superhero. This national program had been eliminated for financial reasons. However, the House of Delegates (HOD) felt that the program has had great success and has garnered much support from schools and from the media.
