Investment and Accountability Mean Better Care

MANAGED CARE plans most likely to provide the best care and service are those that invest in quality and are willing to stand up and be counted, says The State of Managed Care Quality, the annual report of the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).
"Health plans that invest in quality and that make a commitment to accountability deliver higher quality care to their members," said NCQA President Margaret E. O'Kane, speaking at a press conference this fall in Washington, DC, to release the report.
The report makes it clear that there is wide regional variability on key measures of clinical care. It is still true that the quality of medical care one gets very much depends on where one lives, a point that has been made often by such authorities as John Wennberg, MD, of the Department of Community and Family Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School.
