Hypertensive patients who lie awake at night may be at greater risk for heart damage than those who sleep through the night.

In the January issue of the American Journal of Hypertension, researchers at the University of Pavia in Italy reported findings of a study that examined the effect of sleep deprivation on blood pressure and heart rate. The researchers monitored 36 never-treated patients with hypertension during a night when they slept only from 3 AM to 7 AM and again, after a week, during a night when they slept from 11 PM to 7 AM.

The researchers found that blood pressure and heart rate were higher during a sleep deprivation period of 11 PM to 3 AM and during the 3 AM to 7 AM period of sleep than they were during a routine night of sleep.
