Barcelona—Isabel Noguer, technical adviser to the Spanish AIDS National Plan Secretary's office, has announced that the new registry of information about HIV-infected people, the National System of Surveillance of HIV Infection, which was recently approved by the Health Commission of the House of Commons, will be "completely anonymous and confidential." The data will be assembled from the medical records of primary care physicians and hospitals.

Each case patient will be identified by a 15-digit code containing such sociodemographic and epidemiologic data as age and sex, possible route or mechanism of transmission, and risk group (injection drug user, homosexual, heterosexual, hemophiliac, and unknown), sex behavior (anal, vaginal, and orogenital), and clinical stage, virus subtype, type of diagnosis (early or late), and treatment.

This information system, which is already in place and managed by the Ministry of Health, will be progressively implemented in every region of the country.
