Powder-Free Protein-Poor Natural Rubber Latex Gloves and Latex Sensitization

To the Editor: Dental students who use natural rubber latex (NRL) gloves are at risk for sensitization to latex.1-2 Although use of low-protein powder-free NRL gloves might reduce latex sensitization in these students,2 Sussman et al3 failed to show that the incidence of sensitization was related to high protein levels and cornstarch powder.
Methods.
With the approval of the local institutional review boards, 103 fifth-year (graduating) students (44 men and 59 women; mean age, 25 years) working in 4 dental consultation services in Paris, France, and 86 clinical dental students (37 men and 49 women; mean age, 22 years) working at Guy's Hospital in London, England, gave informed consent and were included in a study of latex sensitization.
