Prevention Before Intervention

Military medicine is taking a leading role in trying to develop a health-conscious community with lifestyles aimed at avoiding illness and injury. Sue Bailey, DO, the US Department of Defense's (DoD) assistant secretary for health affairs, is urging physicians in uniform to counsel patients about preventive measures, while Charles H. Roadman II, MD, the surgeon general of the US Air Force, has become DoD's executive agent for this effort "to understand what it is we need to do to take care of each other."

As part of this effort, US Air Force medical personnel are working on reduction and cessation of tobacco use. US Army medical and safety experts are studying how injuries can be prevented, and the US Navy is examining alcohol abuse.
