Central America is receiving what's been called the United States' largest-ever immediate foreign disaster emergency aid. Medical personnel from the US Army, Navy (including those serving with the Marine Corps), Air Force, Reserve, and National Guard are involved. This aid effort is in response to Hurricane Mitch, which killed or injured some 24,000 persons, displaced millions of others, and caused billions of dollars in damage in Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and the vicinity.

The US military medicine involvement with personnel and supplies is continuing and, when it eventually begins to wind down, still will have a presence through US Southern Command, which has headquarters in Miami, Fla, and operates in the region.
