Bethesda, Md—Inspiring stories about people who live or have lived with asthma and health care professionals' long efforts to understand and control the disease are featured in a recently opened exhibit created by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
"Breath of Life," said Donald A. B. Lindberg, MD, director of the National Library of Medicine, where the show is housed, "is our most ambitious exhibition ever.
"The message is simple," he said. "Asthma is the leading cause of chronic illness among youth up to 17 years of age in the United States. It is a massive problem that can be prevented or managed through education."
