  • Edward Verrier, MD, professor and chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center, has received the Gibbon Award from the American Society for Extracorporeal Technology. The award recognizes the work Verrier and colleagues have done exploring the inflammatory response during cardiac surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass.
  • Frederick F. Becker, MD, of the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, has received the M. D. Anderson Presidents' Award in recognition of his "extraordinary contributions to the institution." Also, the Frederick F. Becker Distinguished University Chair for Cancer Research has been established in his honor.
  • Alfred B. Swanson, MD, professor of surgery at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, East Lansing, has been selected for listing in the book 2000 Outstanding Scientists of the 20th Century, published by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridgeshire, England.
