To the Editor: In his review of Damages: One Family's Legal Struggles in the World of Medicine, Dr Tremblay1 refers to experts "ready to say whatever is necessary to support the side that hired them" and then singles out my "staggering fees." As an expert, I provide consultation to plaintiffs and defendants as well as several governmental agencies. I lecture and write about external fetal monitoring (EFM), fetal brain injury, and malpractice2-3all while I continue in full-time private practice.
The author of Damages left most of this information out. As a result, the reviewer could not know my clinical experience, how many defense and plaintiff cases I accept or turn down, and how my expert fees compare with others.
