Three of the nation's preeminent health care accrediting organizations—American Medical Accreditation Program (AMAP), Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), and National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA)—have announced that they will work to develop a common system for evaluating health care at every level.

Collaboration will be carried out through a coordinating body, the Performance Measurement Coordinating Council (PMCC), which was established last year with the goal of improving the efficiency, consistency, and usefulness of performance measurement programs used in assessing all levels of the health care system. This cooperative effort was stimulated by a recommendation from the President's Advisory Commission on Consumer Protection and Quality in the Health Care Industry that urged greater coordination in health care performance measurement endeavors. Efforts to develop a common measurement agenda will begin this month when Carolyn Cocotas assumes the position of staff director of the PMCC.
