The evolution of Alexander Schaffer's Diseases of the Newborn from a single-author work published in 1960 to the present seventh edition with two editors and 85 contributors is a metaphor for the growth and differentiation of neonatal-perinatal medicine in the same four decades. The title, though true to its historical roots, doesn't convey the breadth and depth of recent editions, as the contents go well beyond neonatal diseases and their treatment. Maternal-fetal medicine is included, and the discussions of specific diseases include current concepts of pathophysiology. The scope is further broadened by an excellent introduction that puts the work into historical and epidemiological perspective. Clinicians will find the chapter "Evaluation of Therapeutic Recommendations" invaluable when attempting to relate articles in the current literature to the treatment of patients.
