The FDA has issued a warning about a group of productssold as "party drugs" or dietary supplements for body building, weight loss, and sleep inducementthat pose a significant hazard to public health. The products, sold under such names as GHB, Renewtrient, Revivarant, Blue Nitro, Firewater, and Serenity, are chemically related to -butyrolactone (GBL), -hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), and 1,4 butanediol (BD). They can cause dangerously low respiratory rates, unconsciousness or coma, vomiting, seizures, bradycardia, and death.
-Butyrolactone, GHB, and BD have been linked to at least 145 serious illnesses that have been reported to the FDA, including eight deaths. These agents are powerful hypnotic substances that can produce severe and potentially dangerous sedative effects and increase the effects of alcohol; they are particularly dangerous when consumed with other central nervous systemdepressant drugs. Legally available in the United States only for investigational purposes, GHB has been implicated as a "date rape" drug.
