Quick Test for Pneumonia

The FDA has approved a simple, first-of-its-kind urine test for rapid detection of Streptococcus pneumoniae. The Binax NOW Streptococcus pneumoniae Urinary Antigen Test (Binax Inc, Portland, Me) requires only 1 to 5 ml of urine and provides results in 15 minutes. It is intended to be used as an adjunct to culture for the presumptive diagnosis of pneumococcal pneumonia, and may enable physicians to start specific treatment for S pneumoniae more quickly. To detect the presence or absence of disease, however, this test must be evaluated in the context of clinical findings, radiographic examination, and the results of other laboratory tests such as sputum Gram stain or culture.
