Low Vision Program

Joan Stephenson, PhD

JAMA. 1999;282:1805.

Since this article does not have an abstract, we have provided the first 129 words of the full text and any section headings.

The National Eye Institute (NEI) has unveiled a new Low Vision Education Program to help educate the public about low vision—visual impairment not corrected by lenses or other means—and how a variety of visual and adaptive devices can help people with this impairment keep their independence.

"People with low vision can improve their quality of life through visual rehabilitation services to teach them how to use their remaining vision more effectively," said NEI Director Carl Kupfer, MD.

The program, which will include a multimedia public service campaign and a traveling exhibit, will provide communities with materials and technical support to heighten awareness of services and resources for people with low vision.
