Increasing Incidence of Renal Cell Cancer

To the Editor: The article by Dr Chow and colleagues1 demonstrated that the incidence of renal cell carcinoma increased steadily from 1975 to 1995 in the United States, especially among African Americans. The authors determined that increased detection due to ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging did not fully explain the upward trend and suggested that other factors may be contributing.

We agree with their observation and have previously reported similar findings among patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. After observing renal cell carcinoma in a patient with HIV infection, we conducted a retrospective review of our local hospital population to determine if the prevalence of renal cell carcinoma in patients with HIV infection was greater than in the non–HIV-infected population. Of 66,715 adult patient admissions over a 5-year period, we determined that the prevalence of renal cell carcinoma in the HIV population was 8.5 times greater (649/100,000) . . .
