NEJM Editor Jerome P. Kassirer, MD, Loses Post Over "Administrative Issues"

Now the nation's two top medical journals are searching for new leadership, following the July 26 decision by the Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) not to renew the contract of Jerome P. Kassirer, MD, as editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).

Jack T. Evjy, MD, president of the MMS, said a difference of opinion between Kassirer and the medical society over administrative and publishing issues led to the decision. The action came 6 months after the American Medical Association (AMA) fired George D. Lundberg, MD, who was editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) for 17 years.
While specific details were not released, apparently Kassirer balked at MMS efforts to use the NEJM name on new publications targeted to consumers and physicians, sources close to the situation said. The editorial . . . [Full Text of this Article]
