Abortion and Unplanned Pregnancy

To the Editor: In his discussion about a 26-year-old woman seeking an abortion, Dr Grimes1 never mentioned the option of adoption. As a pediatrician I feel the unborn child, as in this case, deserves an advocate among those of us in the profession, just as we advocate for the rights of children outside the womb. Furthermore, there is no indication that the patient was advised of the potential consequences of abortion.

For instance, abortion can trigger posttraumatic stress disorder, and most women who have undergone an abortion procedure experience guilt and depression.2 The risk of ectopic pregnancy is twice as high for women with a history of 1 abortion and up to 4 times as high for women with 2 or more previous abortions.3
