Anaheim, Calif—Statins save lives, but physicians are not optimizing their use, said researchers at the American College of Cardiology's annual meeting here in March. Some investigators offered suggestions for improvement.

One report showed that for some physicians it may take until 2008, 14 years after publication of a 1994 landmark trial demonstrating the benefits of statins, before they incorporate use of such lipid-lowering agents into their clinical practices. "We are woefully inadequately prescribing [statin therapy] for the people who need it and the reasons are multifactorial, but we need to do a better job," said Lynn Smaha, MD, PhD, president of the American Heart Association.
